ATLANTA—The Oglethorpe University baseball team split its doubleheader against Wabash College Friday afternoon, opening the series with a thrilling 7–6 extra-inning victory in game one before dropping game two, 13–4. With the split, the Stormy Petrels and Little Giants head into Saturday's matchup even in the series, with the rubber game scheduled for 12 p.m.
Game One: Oglethorpe 7, Wabash 6
Oglethorpe battled back in dramatic fashion in the opener, rallying late to secure a 7–6 walk-off victory in 10 innings.
The Stormy Petrels struck first in the bottom of the opening inning when Cade Eidam singled up the middle and later scored on an RBI double down the third-base line from Ryan Causey, giving Oglethorpe an early 1–0 lead.
Wabash responded in the second inning and gradually built a 5–1 advantage, but the Petrels refused to back down. Oglethorpe chipped away at the deficit in the seventh inning when Ethan Snipes tripled to center field and scored on a wild pitch. Later in the inning, Brick Conway lifted a sacrifice fly that brought home Evan Smallwood, and Jace Armstrong came around to score on a defensive miscue, cutting the deficit to 5–4.
After Wabash added a run in the 10th inning to take a 6–5 lead, the Petrels delivered their most clutch moment of the game in the bottom half of the frame. Snipes drew a walk to start the rally, and Armstrong followed with another free pass to put runners on base. With two out, Conway delivered the decisive hit, lining a single through the left side that allowed both runners to score after a Wabash outfield error, sealing the 7–6 walk-off victory for Oglethorpe.
Several Petrels contributed key performances at the plate. Snipes led the offense with two hits, including a triple, and two runs scored, while Conway added two hits and the walk-off RBI. Ryan Causey also contributed with an RBI double, and Eidam, Trey Kinnan and Armstrong each added hits as part of an 11-hit offensive effort.
Game Two: Oglethorpe 4, Wabash 13
In the second game of the doubleheader, Wabash responded with a strong offensive showing, defeating Oglethorpe 13–4.
The Petrels again found offensive production throughout the lineup, highlighted by a four-run rally in the fifth inning. Alex Steckler started the momentum with a single, while Nick Morgan added a base hit to set the table for the scoring opportunity. Evan Smallwood delivered an RBI double to left field to put Oglethorpe on the board.
Shortly after, Conway came through with a clutch single to center field that drove in two runs, cutting the deficit further and bringing energy to the Petrels' dugout.
Despite the offensive push, Wabash continued to apply pressure throughout the game, adding runs in several innings to pull away late. Oglethorpe still managed contributions from multiple players, including hits from Smallwood, Conway, Armstrong, Drew Jabaley, Steckler and Morgan.
Although the Petrels came up short in the second game, their resilience and offensive production earlier in the day helped secure a split in the doubleheader.
