Women's lacrosse drops SAA opener to Rhodes

ATLANTA - The Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels held their Southern Athletic Association opener Saturday against the Rhodes Lynx, which resulted in a 15-5 loss.

Adesewa Atiba led with two goals, a career high four ground balls and a career high four caused turnovers. Ellis Mitchum won five draw controls and Mariah Butler made two assists. Sarah had three ground balls and won three draw controls. 

Madelyn Gardner made six saves and allowed only two goals in the first quarter alone. The Lynx increased the pressure in the second period, racking up eight more goals. Butler and Atiba put Oglethorpe on the board in the final seconds, heading into halftime down 10-2.

Oglethorpe was able to ward off attacks for half of the third period until the Lynx went on a rampage and raised the score to 14-2. Jersey Cuni made the first goal of the fourth quarter, followed by a man-up goal from Anna Conza. Atiba scored later in the period as well, but Rhodes snuck in one more goal for a 15-5 final score.

Game Notes

  • Gardner made 13 saves.
  • Oglethorpe went 12-18 on clears.
  • The Petrels won 11 draw controls, while the Lynx won 10.

Up Next

The Stormy Petrels will host Depauw at home on Thursday, March 26, at 6 p.m. Conference play resumes, and lasts the rest of the season, on Saturday, April 4, at 12 p.m. against Centre.
