ATLANTA — The Oglethorpe University baseball team earned a 5-1 victory over Covenant College on Tuesday evening, using a strong outing on the mound and timely hitting to secure the win.
Oglethorpe improved to 11-8 on the season behind a complete team effort, highlighted by six scoreless innings from starting pitcher Dylan Quintilio and contributions throughout the lineup.
Covenant struck first in the opening inning, as Daniel Counts delivered an RBI single to give the Scots a 1-0 lead. Oglethorpe answered immediately in the bottom half of the frame. Cade Eidam reached base to start the rally and later scored on a ground ball off the bat of Ryan Causey, tying the game at 1-1.
The Petrels took control in the fourth inning when Causey led off with a solo home run to left center, his ninth of the season, giving Oglethorpe a 2-1 advantage.
Oglethorpe added to its lead in the fifth inning. Eidam reached on an error and advanced into scoring position before Aiden Hosford delivered an RBI single up the middle, extending the lead to 3-1.
On the mound, Quintilio settled in after the first inning and kept Covenant off the scoreboard for the remainder of his outing. The right-hander earned the win, allowing one run on six hits over 6.0 innings while striking out three and not issuing a walk.
The Petrels created separation late in the game with runs in the seventh and eighth innings. In the seventh, Trey Kinnan singled and advanced to third before Hosford brought him home with a sacrifice fly to make it 4-1.
In the eighth, Oglethorpe added an insurance run as Eidam doubled down the left field line to score Ben Chatham, pushing the lead to 5-1.
Oglethorpe's bullpen closed the door over the final three innings. Will Lumpkin tossed two scoreless frames, allowing no hits, while Tyler Hower worked a clean ninth inning to secure the victory.
At the plate, Kinnan and Causey led the Petrels with two hits, Causey going 2-for-3 with a home run and an RBI. Eidam scored two runs and added an RBI double, and Hosford drove in two runs on a single and a sacrifice fly.
