ATLANTA — The Oglethorpe University baseball team opened its weekend series against No. 17 Trinity University with a 7-4 loss on Friday evening. The Stormy Petrels recorded six hits and drew five walks but were unable to overcome Trinity's 12-hit performance.
After Trinity took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, Oglethorpe struck back, scoring two runs with two out to even the game back up. Cade Eidam reached base and later scored, while Brick Conway delivered a two-RBI single to left center, bringing home Eidam and Evan Smallwood to tie the game at 2-2 after Trinity plated two runs in the top half of the inning.
Trinity regained control in the middle innings, building a lead that Oglethorpe was unable to fully erase. The Petrels broke through again in the fourth inning when Ethan Snipes singled and later scored on an RBI groundout by Eidam, cutting the deficit to 5-3.
Oglethorpe threatened in the fifth inning, loading the bases with two out after a single from Smallwood and hit-by-pitch to Conway and Snipes, but Trinity escaped the inning without allowing a run.
On the mound, Grant Guinther provided a strong outing in relief, tossing 2.0 scoreless innings while striking out four and allowing just two hits. Will Lumpkin also worked a clean inning out of the bullpen, retiring all three batters he faced in the ninth.
Trailing late, the Petrels added a run in the ninth inning when Ryan Causey connected on a solo home run to left field, his 10th of the year, to make the score 7-4.
At the plate, Causey finished 1-for-5 with a home run and an RBI, while Conway drove in two runs on his first-inning single. Eidam added an RBI and scored once, and Smallwood, Snipes, and Nick Morgan each recorded a hit.
