ATLANTA — The Oglethorpe University baseball team delivered one of its most complete and thrilling performances of the season Saturday, sweeping a doubleheader against No. 17 Trinity University with a dominant 12-2 victory in game one before storming back for an 11-10 walk-off win in game two to with the three-game Southern Athletic Association series.
Behind explosive offense, timely hitting and clutch late-game execution, the Stormy Petrels showcased both power and resilience in a statement day at Hermance Stadium.
Game One: Oglethorpe 12, No. 17 Trinity 2
Oglethorpe set the tone early and never looked back in game one, using a balanced offensive attack and a commanding pitching performance to run away with a 12-2 win.
The Petrels struck first in the second inning when Will Weaver drove in the opening run with an RBI groundout, followed by Aiden Hosford scoring on a wild pitch to make it 2-0. One inning later, Evan Smallwood launched a solo home run to left field to extend the lead.
After Trinity scratched across a run in the fifth, Oglethorpe responded with its biggest inning of the game. The Petrels plated four runs on just two hits, capitalizing on patience at the plate and timely execution. RBI contributions from Ryan Causey, Brick Conway and Aiden Hosford, along with a sacrifice fly from Ethan Snipes, pushed the lead to 7-1.
Oglethorpe continued to add on late, highlighted by a two-RBI double from Snipes in the seventh inning and a two-run double from Brick Conway in the eighth to cap the scoring.
Conway led the offensive surge, finishing 3-for-4 with three RBIs, while Nick Morgan added three hits of his own. Causey and Smallwood each crossed the plate three times, with Smallwood also adding the home run.
On the mound, Micah Knox set the tone before turning things over to Tyler Hower, as the Petrels limited Trinity to just two runs on eight hits.
Game Two: Oglethorpe 11, No. 17 Trinity 10
Game two proved to be a completely different story, as the Petrels rallied from an early five-run deficit and capped the comeback with a dramatic walk-off in the ninth inning.
Trinity jumped out to a 5-0 lead through the first two innings, including a three-run homer in the opening frame. Oglethorpe answered in the third, beginning with an RBI single from Evan Smallwood before Ryan Causey delivered the biggest swing of the day—a game-tying grand slam to even the score at 5-5.
Causey continued his standout performance in the fourth inning with another RBI knock to give Oglethorpe its first lead of the game at 6-5.
The back-and-forth battle continued into the late innings, with Trinity eventually taking a 10-7 lead into the bottom of the ninth.Â
Refusing to back down, the Petrels mounted one final rally. Trey Kinnan sparked the inning by reaching base, and the lineup followed with disciplined at-bats to load the bases. Hosford drew a walk to bring home a run, and Snipes was hit by a pitch to cut the deficit to one.
With the bases still loaded, two out, and down to the last strike, Nick Morgan delivered the decisive blow—a two-RBI single to center field to walk it off and complete the comeback. Conway scored easily from third on the play before Hosford slid just ahead of the tag at the plate for the winning run.
Causey powered the offense in game two, going 3-for-5 with five RBIs, including the grand slam. Morgan added two hits and two RBIs, while Kinnan scored three runs and reached base multiple times.
Out of the bullpen, Dylan Quintilio earned the win, closing out the final innings and keeping the Petrels within striking distance before the offense delivered the game-winning rally.
