ATLANTA - The Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels sent off three seniors with a 20-13 win against the Berry Vikings Saturday afternoon.
Ellis Mitchum led with six goals, five draw controls and four ground balls. Goalie Madelyn Gardner made 12 saves. Mariah Butler scored four goals and had two caused turnovers while Anna Conza, Anna Ramsden and Savannah Freeman all scored three goals each.
Ramsden also made five assists, Conza four assists, and Freeman two. Additionally, Conza won eight draw controls and Freeman won four. Butler, Brenda Jimnah, and Sarah Liang each had two caused turnovers.
Berry scored the first goal almost immediately, but Conza soon found the equalizer. A good chunk of the first period was scoreless, until the Vikings scored twice in a row around the seven minute mark. The Petrels did not let those back-to-back goals phase them and went on to score three in a row. Two of those were scored by Mitchum, and one by Ramsden.Â
Berry scored at the top of the second quarter to set the score at 4-4. Adesewa Atiba broke that tie, then Butler added another goal. The score tied again later at 7-7, then the Petrels went on a 4-0 run. Freeman, Butler, Mitchum and Ramsden all scored to head into halftime up 11-7.
Oglethorpe continued to outscore the Vikings in the third quarter, and especially in the fourth. Berry managed a few more goals and even made the final goal of the game, but the Petrels created enough of a buffer early on to emerge with a 20-13 win.
