Petrels show fight but fall in series at Centre

DANVILLE, Ky. – The Oglethorpe University baseball team wrapped up a Southern Athletic Association series against Centre College on Sunday afternoon, dropping the finale 6-0 to suffer its first three-game SAA sweep of the season. While the results did not fall in the Petrels' favor, Oglethorpe showed resilience, timely hitting, and strong individual performances throughout the three-game set, highlighted by a near upset in extra innings on day one.

Game One: Oglethorpe 2, Centre 3 (10 innings)

Oglethorpe opened the series with its strongest performance of the weekend, battling Centre into extra innings before falling 3-2 in a tightly contested matchup.

After trailing 2-0 through five innings, the Petrels chipped away in the sixth when Aiden Hosford delivered an RBI double down the left field line, scoring Ryan Causey and cutting the deficit in half. Oglethorpe continued to apply pressure late, and Causey came through in a big moment in the eighth inning, launching a game-tying solo home run to right field.

Causey's home run was his 14th of the year, tying the Oglethorpe single-season record set by Adrian Celata in 2016.

The pitching staff kept the Petrels in position all afternoon. Parker Spring was outstanding in relief, tossing 4.2 innings of shutout baseball while allowing just one hit and striking out two. Oglethorpe forced extra innings before Centre walked it off in the 10th.

Offensively, Trey Kinnan led the way with two hits, while Hosford and Causey each drove in a run in a balanced effort.

Game Two: Oglethorpe 2, Centre 7

The Petrels once again showed fight, rallying late before Centre pulled away in the middle game of the series.

After falling behind 3-0, Oglethorpe responded in the seventh inning with a two-run rally. Causey sparked the inning with a single, while Brick Conway and Will Weaver helped load the bases. Jace Armstrong worked a bases-loaded walk to bring in the first run, and Nick Morgan followed with a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 3-2.

On the mound, Micah Knox turned in a solid start, allowing three runs across six innings while keeping the Petrels within striking distance. Despite the late push, Centre added insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings to secure the win.

Conway reached base four times in the contest, drawing three walks and adding a hit, while Oglethorpe's patience at the plate helped generate opportunities throughout the game.

Game Three: Oglethorpe 0, Centre 6

In the series finale, the Petrels collected eight hits but were unable to convert offensively, falling 6-0.

Oglethorpe showed consistency at the plate, with Armstrong leading the way with three hits, including a double. Cade Eidam and Evan Smallwood each added multihit performances as the Petrels continued to generate baserunners.

Out of the bullpen, Dylan Quintilio provided a bright spot, allowing just one run over 4.2 innings and stabilizing the game after an early deficit. Josh Stewart followed with 1.1 scoreless innings, continuing a strong showing from the relief corps.

Despite the shutout, Oglethorpe consistently put pressure on Centre pitching, tallying eight hits and threatening in multiple innings.
