ATLANTA – The Oglethorpe University baseball team fell to Huntingdon College 10-3 Tuesday evening despite a competitive middle stretch and strong individual performances at the plate. The Stormy Petrels tallied seven hits and worked five walks but were unable to overcome an early deficit and a late surge from Huntingdon.
Huntingdon struck first and built momentum early, plating five runs in the third inning to put Oglethorpe on its heels. The Petrels, however, responded with a composed and productive bottom half of the third inning to cut into the deficit. Cade Eidam drew a walk to spark the rally, while Trey Kinnan followed with a single to put multiple runners on base. Evan Smallwood delivered a key RBI single to bring home Eidam, and later in the inning, Brick Conway lifted a sacrifice fly to score Kinnan, trimming the margin to 5-2.
Oglethorpe continued to apply pressure in the fourth inning, manufacturing another run without recording a hit. Jace Armstrong reached base and aggressively advanced, eventually scoring on a Huntingdon throwing error to make it a 5-3 contest. Despite limited hits in the inning, the Petrels capitalized on defensive miscues to stay within striking distance.
At the plate, Smallwood led the way with a standout 3-for-5 performance and one RBI. Kinnan also contributed with a multihit effort, while Armstrong and Maddox Husband each added base knocks to support the offense. Eidam showed patience throughout the game, drawing three walks and reaching base consistently at the top of the lineup.
On the mound, Parker Spring got the start and struck out four over 2.1 innings of work. Ross Rea provided a strong relief appearance, allowing no runs over 1.2 innings while working around traffic. Paul Gaeta also delivered an effective outing, surrendering just one unearned run across 2.2 innings and recording two strikeouts. Despite these efforts, a high-scoring inning from Huntingdon widened the gap late and put the game out of reach. Oglethorpe threatened in the later innings, including a two-hit eighth inning, but was unable to convert those opportunities into runs.
