ATLANTA - After a draw at Wednesday's home opener, the Stormy Petrels defeated the Talladega Tornadoes 3-2 Saturday evening at home.
Myleigh Oglesby, Evan Thomas and Rowan Gross each scored goals. Gross took six shots and also made the assist on Oglesby's goal.
Talladega scored the first goal very early in the game, which received a quick response from Oglesby. Possession was split fairly even for the rest of the first half, as both teams took four more shots. The Tornadoes ultimately took control of the final minutes, adding one more goal before halftime.
Goalkeeper Katherine Crim entered at the top of the second half and prevented Talladega from scoring again. Oglethorpe's offense was patient for the perfect moment, with Thomas finding her opportunity halfway through the period. She drove the ball through the attacking third, then outsmarted a one-on-one with the keeper to tie the game at 2-2.
Fourteen minutes later, Gross took advantage of a free kick to lift the Petrels to 3-2. Talladega took two more shots, but neither were serious threats. Oglethorpe held on for the 3-2 win, its first victory of the season.
