Men’s soccer ends weekend with 1-1 draw

ATLANTA- The Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels battled to a 1-1 draw against Berea College Sunday afternoon at home to close out a weekend of competition. Addofo El Bey scored an early goal which appeared to be the eventual winner, but the Petrels' lead was equalized after a last second penalty kick awarded to Berea.

Sophomore goalkeeper Sebastian Lewis tallied four saves, and the team recorded 12 shots.

The possession of the game was back and forth in the first half. Nick Krull opened the Petrels' offense with a shot on goal in the 15th minute followed by a shot on goal from Berea two minutes later, but it was contained by Lewis.

Berea took nine shots looking to score first but were diffused by the Petrel defense. Shama Shasha drove the ball down field to the corner where he found Gustavo Canas on a short pass to El Bey. El Bey sent a shot past the goalkeeper to put the Petrels on the board 1-0 in the 43rd minute.

The two played back and forth through the second half. Five shots by Elliott Wheelhouse, two from Alessandro Campos, Alex Watson and Nathan Leveque looked to advance the Petrels in the late 80th minute.

A penalty kick was awarded to Berea in the final minute and despite a great effort by Lewis to get a hand on it, the shot ricocheted into the net.

With the score tied at 1-1, the Petrels ran out of time to advance and ended the weekend in a draw.

This was the first matchup between the Petrels and Berea.
