ATLANTA, Ga. – The Oglethorpe University volleyball team faced a challenging three-match weekend, dropping contests against Berry College, Transylvania University and Belhaven University. The Stormy Petrels opened the weekend with their first Southern Athletic Association (SAA) match of the season against Berry before facing Transylvania later Friday and closing out the weekend against Belhaven on Saturday.
Despite the 0-3 weekend, Oglethorpe showcased several individual performances and competitive stretches, including a four-set battle against Belhaven and a closely contested opening set against Transylvania.
Match One: Berry 3, Oglethorpe 0
Oglethorpe opened its weekend slate Friday morning against Berry College, falling 3-0 by set scores of 25-10, 25-15 and 25-11. The matchup marked the Petrels' first SAA contest of the 2026 season.
Madison Thompson, Callie Simmons and Sarah Johnson each recorded two kills to lead Oglethorpe offensively. Thompson added a block, while Simmons contributed a block of her own.
Lauryn Frazier paced the Petrels with six assists, helping facilitate the offense throughout the three-set match. Abby Wheeler led Oglethorpe with three digs, while Frazier and Adrianne Ryan each added two.
Match Two: Transylvania 3, Oglethorpe 0
The Petrels returned to the court Friday afternoon to face Transylvania University, falling in straight sets by scores of 26-24, 25-16 and 25-14.
Oglethorpe opened the match with its most competitive set of the contest, pushing Transylvania beyond the 25-point mark before falling 26-24. The Petrels recorded 14 kills in the opening set, with the offense continuing to generate opportunities throughout the match.
Thompson led Oglethorpe with eight kills on 15 attacks, hitting .400. Jane Pennington followed with six kills, while Simmons added five. Thompson also contributed two service aces and a block.
Frazier recorded a team-high 12 assists, while Ava Adams added five. Wheeler paced the defensive effort with nine digs, and Frazier, Ryan and Pennington each contributed three.
Oglethorpe finished with 29 kills, seven service aces and 27 digs. Transylvania recorded 35 kills and 13 service aces, while adding 36 digs.
Match Three: Belhaven 3, Oglethorpe 1
Oglethorpe closed out the weekend Saturday afternoon at home against Belhaven University, falling 3-1 by scores of 25-19, 24-26, 25-12 and 25-18.
The Petrels responded after dropping the opening set, taking the second set 26-24 to even the match at one set apiece. Oglethorpe's offense produced 17 kills in the set, while the team added 10 assists and 10 digs.
Callie Simmons led the Petrels with 10 kills, while Thompson and Aubrey Hill each finished with seven. Simmons also recorded two blocks, and Thompson contributed three.
Frazier and Adams shared the team lead with 17 assists apiece. Wheeler and Annabelle Turnbull each recorded 12 digs, while Frazier added 11 as Oglethorpe finished with 53 digs.
The Petrels also matched Belhaven with six service aces. Frazier and Turnbull each recorded two, while Wheeler added one.
Belhaven finished with 46 kills and 14 blocks, while Oglethorpe recorded 41 kills and five blocks. The Blazers' blocking advantage contributed to the final outcome as they closed out the match in four sets.
