LAGRANGE, Ga. - The Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels commanded the field tonight for a 5-1 win over the LaGrange Panthers.
Ella Nuzum (2), Mikayla Stuart, Rowan Gross, and Emma Perkins scored in the thrilling win while goalkeeper Katherine Crim made two saves.
Gross set the tone for the entire match by taking an on-target shot right out of the gate. Although this one and another by Perkins were saved, Gross and Nuzum returned with back-to-back penalty kicks that gave Oglethorpe a 2-0 lead just 20 minutes into the game.
Perkins also found herself a goal before too long, thanks to an assist by Evan Thomas. Ashley Flores took the next, and only other shot for Oglethorpe, but it was again saved by LaGrange's Anna Wright. The Panthers took one last shot in the final second of the first period, but the Petrels headed into halftime up 3-0.
The Panthers held their ground for a majority of the second period and even managed a goal. Oglethorpe quickly regained control, and then a series of shots allowed Nuzum to break through and score with Zerm on the assist. The Petrels continued to dominate the field for the rest of the game, with Stuart adding the cherry on top for the 5-1 win.
Game Notes
This was the first goal of Stuart's career and Nuzum's first goals as a petrel.
Oglethorpe's record against the Panthers is now 21-4-1.
The Petrels had five corner kicks against the Panthers' three.
Gross took eight shots on goal and Thomas had seven.
