ATLANTA- The Oglethorpe men's soccer team played two matches this weekend in the Sonny Carter Invitational at Emory University versus Brevard College and Belhaven University. The Petrels fell 2-1 against Brevard on Saturday but bounced back on Sunday to take a 2-1 comeback victory over Belhaven.
Christian Watson and Nathan Leveque were both named to the all-tournament team.
Oglethorpe versus Belhaven
Belhaven held most of the possession in the first half and scored an early goal in the 29th minute.
With the Petrels down 1-0, shots by Mason Reagan, Jake Duncan-Smith and Nicholas Lulu all tried to equalize, yet were contained by Belhaven.
Eli Beard opened the second half with a shot that missed high. Leveque sent a short pass to find Nick Krull in a one-on-one with the goalkeeper to find the back left of the goal to equalize the score at 1-1.
Oglethorpe and Belhaven were back and forth both with two shots until Adoffo El Bey drove down to the corner and sent a through ball back to find Kenny Griffin where he took a shot that flew past Belhaven to secure the 2-1 victory for the Petrels.
Oglethorpe versus Brevard
Brevard scored in the 34th minute after a standstill first half. The Petrels opened the second half trailing by one but two consecutive shots by Nathan Leveque worked to put the offensive pressure on Brevard, despite them being saved. A second goal for Brevard came at the 60th minute giving them a 2-0 advantage.
Shama Shasha came back in the 76th minute with a shot assisted by Rhys Pollard and Erik Holmen that put the Petrels on the board. Reagan and Lucas Brown both took shots on goal looking to equalize, but ultimately the Petrels ran out of time and fell 2-1.
