Paul Danielson joined Oglethorpe’s athletics staff first in 2015 as assistant coach before earning the role as head coach prior to 2019-20 season. Danielson served under longtime head coach Peter Howell, whom after Oglethorpe’s courts are named, as assistant and took over as head coach upon Howell’s retirement.

Danielson achieved quick success as head coach of the program in leading the men’s team to their first NCAA national championship appearance in 2021. That year, the Stormy Petrels won the Southern Athletic Association regular season for the second time and the SAA postseason tournament for the first time. Danielson was named coach of the year after the team's success that year. 

Prior to Oglethorpe

Danielson ascended to the head coaching position after more than 30 years of coaching and instructional experience, having served as the head tennis professional and the director of tennis at clubs in the Atlanta area and Alabama. 

Immediately prior to his arrival as assistant at Oglethorpe, Danielson served as director of tennis and site director at nearby Blackburn Tennis Center, the place where he grew up and learned how to play the game. Danielson served at Blackburn from 2008 until 2015.

Prior to Blackburn, Danielson was director of tennis at Gadsden Country Club in Gadsden, Alabama, from 2000 to 2008, and head professional at Piedmont Driving Club in Atlanta from 1988 to 2000.

Education | Personal

Danielson played tennis at Francis Marion before graduating from Georgia State in 1988 with a degree in criminal justice. He holds USTA high performance certification and USPTA player development certification.

Danielson married his wife, Angela, in 1987, and they have one daughter, Jayme, a 2012 graduate of Oglethorpe. Jayme played four years of tennis under Howell.

Danielson was born and raised in Norcross and currently resides in Buckhead.
