Women's tennis kicks off fall season at John McWilliams Invitational

The Stormy Petrel women's tennis team kicked off their 2019-20 season in Montgomery, Alabama, at the John McWilliams Invitational, making an impressive opening with a 14-13 singles and 6-6 doubles overall record. They did this despite playing with all new double partners and a third of the team being incoming freshmen.

The team's consistent serving ability was their overwhelming strength, as well as their full-court coverage. Senior Ela Biekicki showed what three years of collegiate tennis is about in singles by pulling out a tough tiebreaker after being down 5-1 to win 10-7. Freshman Maria Berroa demonstrated consistent improvement in her singles with unbelievable poise.

In doubles, Hannah Datillo and Kendall Kramer led by showing their ability to adapt to different styles of play. Lisette Phillips and Ela Bielicki's determination not to lose was unwavering. Alyssa Merletti and Alexis Salguiero, both freshmen, displayed maturity on the court beyond their years. Brooke Dotson and Katie Hunter were the definition of steady improvement over the course of the weekend's matches.

"Our key takeaways as we move into preparing for our ITA tournament will be match toughness and closing out game points," said Oglethorpe head tennis coach Paul Danielson.
