The Oglethorpe University baseball team defeated LaGrange
College on the road on Wednesday evening, 10-5.
The Petrels used two runs each in the fourth and fifth innings
to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 5-2 lead. RBI singles by Matthew
Cornwell and Andrew Lofholm gave the Petrels the 3-2 lead in the
fourth, and a sac fly by Jake Spear and an RBI single by Jeff Pope
in the fifth gave the Petrels the three-run lead.
LaGrange pulled their deficit back to 5-4 over the next two
innings, but the Petrels would put the game away in the eighth and
ninth, scoring five runs over the last two innings.
A two-run double by J.J. Rizzo and an RBI single by Andy Farrey
would give the Petrels their three runs in the eighth. Then, after
LaGrange scored a run in the bottom half to make it 8-5, the
Petrels would end the scoring in the ninth with an RBI groundout by
Cornwell and an RBI walk by Farrey.
Freshman righty John Gibbs moved his record to a perfect 3-0 on
the season, as he allowed just one earned run on four hits over
five innings.
Farrey had the best evening at the plate for the Petrels, going
2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. He also worked three walks
on the night.
Oglethorpe moved back to the .500 mark, at 13-13 on the year,
with the win. They will continue SCAC play this weekend when
Sewanee comes to town for a three-game set. Saturday will feature a
doubleheader, with first pitch schedule for 2 p.m. A single game
will be played on Sunday. First pitch for that game will be at 1
p.m.
