ATLANTA—Oglethorpe senior Parker Spring nabbed the last Southern Athletic Association athlete of the week honor after a strong relief appearance last weekend in the Stormy Petrels' series win over Sewanee. The SAA made the announcement Monday, and it marked Spring's first weekly honor of his career.
Oglethorpe rallied back in the series opener against Sewanee Friday night, and Spring's lights-out effort in the ninth, 10th and 11th innings helped the Petrels secure a walk-off victory.
After eight strong innings from starter Tyler Hower, a two-time SAA athlete of the week this year, Spring entered in the ninth and quickly settled in to throw three scoreless innings. He struck out six and walked only one while allowing three hits. He worked around two on in the ninth and a runner on second in the 11th but used strikeouts to end both threats.
Spring picked up his third win of the season to improve to 3-2 overall. He follows Hower (April 6, April 20) and Evan Smallwood (April 20) as SAA weekly honor winners this season.
Spring and the Stormy Petrels will head to the SAA tournament this weekend after winning five of seven SAA series this year. The first matchup will be versus Centre Thursday at 1:15 p.m. in the second game of the day.
