The day after clinching a spot in the SCAC Tournament, the
Oglethorpe baseball team lost the series finale to Centre, 7-2,
Sunday afternnon in Danville, Ky.
The Petrels started the game well, scoring two in the first to
take a 2-0 lead. The runs came on a two-run double from Stephen Archer.
However, the homestanding Colonels would score seven unanswered
runs, starting with two in the first, to put the game away.
Archer was 1-for-2 with the double, a walk and an HBP for the
Petrels.
Mark Hoban got the loss, allowing all 12 hits and all seven runs
the Colonels would get over his six innings of work.
The loss drops the Petrels to 19-15 on the season, 7-5 in SCAC
play. They are currently second in the SCAC East Division, as they
hold the tiebreaker over DePauw, who is also 7-5. However, with
first-place Birmingham-Southern ineligible to participate in the
SCAC Tournament, the Petrels are currently holding first position
out of the division for the tournament.
Oglethorpe will face off against Birmingham-Southern next
weekend in their final home series of the season, and could wind up
anywhere from the top seed to the third seed in the East, as Rhodes
is currently holding fourth place (third seed for the tournament)
with a 6-6 record.
First, however, the Petrels will face off against two area
rivals during the middle of this week. They will travel to
Montgomery, Ala., to take on Huntingdon at 5 p.m. Tuesday, and then
will return home Wednesday to close their season series with
crosstown rival Emory in a game that was resceduled because of a
snowstorm in February. That game will get underway at 7 p.m.
