The Oglethorpe baseball team lost its home finale to Birmingham
Southern 11-6 on Sunday.
It looked for awhile as though the Petrels were going to pull a
win out on Senior Day. They trailed 5-1 entering the bottom of the
eighth, but were able to score five runs in the inning to take a
6-5 lead.
Stephen
Archer started the scoring in the inning with a sacrifice fly,
and a Nick
Manai RBI single followed to cut the lead to 5-3.
At that point, Joseph Parillo
stepped to the plate and slugged a three-run homer to give the
Petrels the lead. It was his second home run of the season, the
first being a pinch-hit, walk-off grand slam earlier in the
year.
However, the Petrels were not able to hold the lead in the
ninth, as they gave up six runs to give the visiting Panthers their
five-run margin-of-victory.
Sunday was Senior Day for the Petrels, and the team honored
graduating seniors J.J. Rizzo, Stephen
Archer and Ben
Giddens for their fine careers with Oglethorpe.
The loss drops the Petrels to 19-20 on the year. They will now
finish 7-8 in SCAC play. That record has earned them the third seed
out of the Eastern Division for the SCAC Tournament in Millington,
Tenn. They will open the tournament against Trinity, the top seed
out of the Western Division, Thursday at 1 p.m. Eastern time. It is
a double-elimination tournament.
First, the Petrels will travel to LaGrange Tuesday for their
final game of the regular season. First pitch is scheduled for 6
p.m.
