Box Score The Oglethorpe baseball team found itself locked in a pitcher's duel at LaGrange Wednesday afternoon, and due to a late sacrifice fly by the home-standing Panthers unearned run, they lost out 2-1.
With the game tied 1-1 in the bottom of the eighth, the LaGrange leadoff hitter reached second on an error, was sacrificed to third, and then scored on a sacrifice fly, giving the Panthers their final margin of victory.
Though he suffered the loss, Oglethorpe starter Sam Briend pitched very well. He recorded a complete game, allowing just one earned run on four hits. He walked four and struck out six. Unfortunately, he drops to 0-2 on the season.
The Petrels scored their lone run of the game in the sixth. Shortstop Matt Cornwell led off with a single and was sacrificed to second by second baseman Jake Spear. Two batters later, first baseman Adam Brazenas singled Cornwell home with the Petrels' only run.
The game was completed in a very brisk two hours and three minutes.
The loss drops the Petrels to 2-3 on the year. They will now take a few days off before getting back to action against Washington and Lee on Sunday at Anderson Field. First pitch is scheduled for approximately 2 p.m.
