Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 The Oglethorpe baseball team was swept in a home doubleheader by the Huntingdon Hawks Tuesday. The Petrels dropped Game 1, 5-2, and Game 2 by the score of 7-2.
In Game 1, the Petrels took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Shortstop Matt Cornwell started the rally with a one-out single and right fielder Brendan Pilger followed by getting hit by a pitch. This set up first baseman Adam Brazenas for his RBI single. After that, both teams settled into a pitcher's duel until the top of the fifth inning, when Huntingdon scored four runs to, effectively, win the game. Oglethorpe was able to grab a run back in the sixth on a Jake Spear RBI groundout, but it wasn't enough. Neal Amos pitched very well for 4 2/3 innings, but still went home with the loss as Huntingdon rallied for four runs on him. He allowed five hits.
In Game 2, Huntingdon took a 3-0 lead in the first and never gave it back. The Petrels got single runs in the first and fourth innings, cutting the lead to one. Jeff Pope led off with a single in the first, stole second, and came home on a Cornwell RBI single. However, Oglethorpe grounded into a double play later in the inning, missing a chance to get more runs. Then in the fourth, first baseman Andy Farrey hit a two-out single and came around on a Cory Leff RBI triple. But the Petrels would get no closer, and Huntingdon scored four runs in the seventh to put the game away. Oglethorpe grounded into three double plays in the game.
With the two losses, the Petrels drop to 3-5 on the year. They will next be in action tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m., when they will travel to East Tennessee to take on Maryville. They will then have almost a week off before getting back to action next Tuesday.
