The Oglethorpe baseball team dropped to 0-3 on the road this season with a 4-1 loss at Maryville Wednesday.

The Petrels got a very good performance from starting pitcher Emmett Goodman, but were only able to score one run, and Maryville was able to grab a lead and pull away late. Goodman gave up only one run and two hits through four innings of work, striking out seven. However, he ran into trouble in the fourth, when he walked three men in the inning, including one that forced in a run. He left with a no decision.

The Petrels took a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Second baseman Jake Spear led off the inning with a single and was sacrificed to second by left fielder Will Hanna. Center fielder Jeff Pope then followed with an RBI double to give the Petrels the lead. They missed a chance to extend their lead later in the inning, though, when Pope was thrown out at the plate trying to score on a flyout.

The Petrels then gave up an unearned run in the sixth on a botched rundown play and two runs in the seventh on a throwing error and a double-play grounder to reach the final margin.

David Langhan was hung with the loss, though he also pitched well. He gave up a hit and a run over two innings of work, walking one and striking out two.

Pope had an excellent day at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a stolen base from the nine-spot in the order. Designated hitter Andy Farrey was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk.

The loss drops the Petrels to 3-6 on the year. They will now take several days off before getting back to action at Covenant on Tuesday. First pitch will be at approximately 2 p.m. from Lookout Mountain, Ga.
