Box Score The Oglethorpe baseball team dropped their fourth straight game on Tuesday, losing at Covenant, 11-7.
The Petrels fell behind 2-0 early, but were able to tie the score with a run each in the fourth and fifth innings. Right fielder Cory Leff led off the fourth with a single. That was followed by a Jeff Brothers single, advancing Leff to third. Then third baseman Ryan Grau drove Leff in with a single to right field. In the fifth, shortstop Matt Cornwell started a rally with a two-out single. Left fielder Brendan Pilger drove him in with an RBI double to the gap in right-center, tying the game.
However, in the bottom of the fifth, Covenant came back with three runs to take control of the game. They later followed with two in the seventh and four in the eighth to take a commanding 11-2 lead.
The Petrels mounted a rally in the ninth inning, but the nine-run deficit was too much to overcome. They scored five runs in the inning, and would have brought the potential tying run to the plate had they not had a runner round second base too widely and get thrown out to end the game. The Petrel runs came on a Cornwell RBI-fielder's choice, a Casey Tuttle sacrifice fly (the first RBI and first plate appearance of his career), a Brothers bases-loaded walk, and RBI singles by designated hitter Adam Brazenas and Grau.
Mark Hoban suffered the loss, giving up three runs on four hits in two innings of work. Sam Briend got the start and allowed one earned run on one hit over three innings, but he walked four.
Grau led the Petrels at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs, a walk and a run scored.
The loss drops the Petrels to 3-7 on the year. They will next be in action on Saturday, when they get SCAC play started with a doubleheader at Sewanee. The first game will start at approximately 1 p.m. Eastern, and the second game will start approximately 20 minutes after the end of the first.
