Box Score 2 The Oglethorpe baseball team got off to an excellent start in their 2011 SCAC campaign, sweeping a doubleheader from Sewanee Tuesday evening, 7-6 and 4-2. The doubleheader was a makeup date for the rained out series originally scheduled for two weekends ago in Sewanee.
In Game 1, the Petrels built a 7-3 lead in the fourth inning of the seven-inning game. When Sewanee began to come back, the Petrels went to closer Matt Cornwell earlier than usual, needing him to get the last nine outs of the game. He did so to record his fourth save of the year.
Jeff Brothers had an excellent game at the plate for the Petrels, going 2-for-3 with a double, a sacrifice fly and four RBIs. David Langhan picked up the win in relief for the Petrels to improve to 2-1 on the year.
In Game 2, the Petrels built a quick 3-0 lead in the third inning, and then rode a great pitching performance by Sam Briend to the victory. Briend threw seven innings of five-hit ball, allowing just one earned run and striking out eight. The win was Briend's first of the season. Cornwell pitched the ninth inning in this game, as well, to pick up his fifth save of the season.
The two wins give the Petrels a 2-0 start to the SCAC season, and improve them to 11-7 overall. They will next be in action Wednesday afternoon, when they welcome Selma to Anderson Field. First pitch will be at approximately 3 p.m.
