Box Score The Oglethorpe baseball team lost a non-conference game to Maryville College on Tuesday evening, falling 7-2.
They fell behind 4-1 in the third inning and Maryville was able to keep them at arm's length for the rest of the game, adding an additional run in the fourth and two more in the sixth. Meanwhile, the Petrels were only able to manage two runs on five hits.
The Petrels were able to take a 1-0 lead in the first. Center fielder Jeff Pope led off the inning with a double and was balked to third. Shortstop Matt Cornwell then came through with a sacrifice fly to give the Petrels the lead.
The Petrels second run came in the sixth with the visiting Scots up 7-1. Left fielder Brendan Pilger rocketed a line drive over the left-field wall for his seventh home run of the year to give the Petrels their final tally.
The game was largely a bullpen game for both pitching staffs. Maryville used a whopping eight pitchers, while the Petrels used four of their own.
With the loss, the Petrels drop to 13-10 on the year. They will next be in action on Saturday. They will be traveling to Greencastle, Ind., to take on SCAC rival DePauw in a doubleheader, and then a single game on Sunday. The Saturday doubleheader will get started at noon ET.
The Petrels currently sit third in the SCAC Eastern Division at 3-2. However, with first-place Birmingham-Southern ineligible to compete for the championship, Oglethorpe is effectively in second place. The top three teams from the division advance to the SCAC Tournament. DePauw is currently in last place at 0-3.
