Oglethorpe Tops Covenant, 11-6

Box Score

The Oglethorpe baseball team used 15 hits and a six-run fifth inning to defeat Covenant Wednesday evening, 11-6. The win improves the Petrels' record to 15-12 on the season leading into a big three-game series with Rhodes this weekend.

The Petrels got a two-run home run from shortstop Matt Cornwell in the first inning to go up 2-1, then picked up an additional run in the second with a two-out rally to make it 3-1. However, after falling behind 4-3 in the third, Oglethorpe changed the game back around in the fifth.

The big blows in the inning were an RBI single by third baseman Joe Parillo and a two-run single by catcher Jeff Brothers. The Petrels also got the help of two bases-loaded walks and three Covenant errors during the inning.

The Petrels then got single runs in the sixth and seventh innings on a Jeff Pope RBI double and a Jake Spear RBI single, respectively.

The visiting Scots picked up a couple of late runs, but by that point, it was too little, too late for them.

Pope had a 4-for-5 night at the plate for the Petrels, with two doubles, a walk, two RBIs and three runs scored. Brothers went 2-for-3 with three walks, three RBIs and a run scored. Cornwell also had a good night at the plate, going 2-for-5 with a home run, a walk, three RBIs and two runs scored.

Neal Amos picked up the win in relief for the Petrels, improving his record to 1-3 on the year. He pitched two innings of shutout ball, allowing two hits and striking out one.

The Rhodes series will get started with a late afternoon doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. The annual alumni baseball game will take place before the scheduled doubleheader, and the team will be promoting the National Cancer Society's "Think Pink" initiative all weekend long.
