Petrels Drop Game to Huntingdon, 7-1

Box Score

The Oglethorpe baseball team dropped to 1-1 on the young season Tuesday night, losing in Montgomery, Ala., 7-1, to home-standing Huntingdon College. John Gibbs picked up the loss on the night.

The Petrels committed six errors in the game, allowing just one earned run out of seven total runs. That run was not allowed by Gibbs, as he allowed six runs, none earned, on three hits. The Petrels committed three errors in Huntingdon's three-run third inning alone.

Oglethorpe's lone run was manufactured by center fielder Vernon Trice in the third. He led off with a single, advanced to second on a groundout and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by shortstop Ryan Grau. He then scored on an infield single by third baseman Nick Manai, cutting the Huntingdon lead to 4-1, but that was all the Petrels would get.

Trice was 2-for-4 with the run scored on the day, and Manai was 1-for-2 with the RBI and two walks.

The Petrels will next be in action on Friday, when they head to Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, Ga., home of the Gwinnett Braves, to take on Piedmont at 1 p.m. They will also take in LaGrange and Emory from Coolray Field later in the weekend.
