Petrels Lose to Amherst, 16-2

The Oglethorpe baseball team's spring break trip to Winter Haven, Fla., for the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational continued in inauspicious fashion Monday morning, as they fell to Amherst, 16-2, in seven innings.

Amherst scored six runs in the second inning, then followed it up with four in the third, and three in both the fifth and sixth, accounting for all their runs in the first five innings.

The Petrels scored two runs in the fifth. Joey McAlpin singled with one out and Casey Tuttle reached base on an Amherst error. TJ Schmutz then strode to the plate and hit a two-run double, driving both in and accounting for the only Petrel runs of the game.

David Langhan got the start and was roughed up in three innings of work, suffering the loss.

The Petrels were outhit 17-4 in the game.

The loss drops the Petrels to 6-11 on the year, they will next be in action tomorrow, when they will complete RussMatt Central Florida Invitational action at 9 a.m. against Washington and Jefferson.
