Petrels Lose Tough One to Huntingdon Late

Box Score

The Oglethorpe baseball team lost a tough game to Huntingdon on Tuesday evening, losing 7-5 on a ninth-inning home run by the visiting Hawks.

The Petrels fell behind, 2-0, early on in the game, but were able to bounce back in the fourth with a couple of runs to tie the game. Right fielder Cory Leff started out the rally with a one-out walk and advanced to third on a double by catcher Jeff Brothers. Designated hitter Joe Parillo then drove in the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly and left fielder Joey McAlpin singled Brothers home to tie the game.

The Petrels then took the lead in the fifth inning. A pair of singles by shortstop Ryan Grau and second baseman Jake Spear put runners at the corners with one out, and center fielder Vernon Trice came through with a sacrifice fly to give Oglethorpe the 3-2 lead.

However, Huntingdon was able to score a run in each of the next three innings to take their two-run lead back. In the bottom of the eighth, Leff hit a one-out single and advanced to second on a balk. Brothers followed with a walk, bringing Parillo to the plate. The Oglethorpe designated hitter came through with a double to the left-center field gap, scoring both runs and tying the game.

But Huntingdon led off the ninth with a single and a home run to take a 7-5 lead and held on to win from there.

Cory Leff suffered the loss in relief, dropping to 0-2 on the year. Parillo had a good day for the Petrels, going 1-for-2 with a double, a sacrifice fly, a walk and three RBIs.

The loss drops the Petrels to 5-7 on the year. They will next be in action Friday evening, when Berry will pay the Stormy Petrels a visit. First pitch will occur at around 6 p.m.
