Petrels Drop Home Finale to Emory, 7-4

Box Score

The Oglethorpe baseball team lost its home finale to crosstown rival Emory Saturday, losing 7-4. The Petrels doubled Emory's hit total on the day, 12-6, but the visiting Eagles got a two-run home run and a three-run double among their six hits.

The Petrels jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the third. Third baseman Frank Sarno and left fielder Joey McAlpin led off the inning with singles. Then, with two outs in the inning, senior second baseman Jake Spear, who was honored with designated hitter Joe Parillo as part of Senior Day festivities, came through with a run-scoring single.

However, Emory scored five straight runs, four of them unearned, to take a 5-1 lead going into the bottom of the fifth. In that inning, Trice and Spear led off the inning with singles, and Trice scored on an Emory error to cut the Eagle lead to three. With one out, right fielder Nick Manai drove in Spear with a bunt single to make the score 5-3. Then, an infield single by first baseman Casey Tuttle scored shortstop T.J. Schmutz and the Petrels were within a single run, 5-4.

That would be the last run Oglethorpe would score, however, and Emory would add two additional runs in the ninth to put the game away.

Emmett Goodman got the start for the Petrels and suffered the loss. He was undone by a bad-luck fourth inning in which Emory scored four unearned runs. He left after six innings, allowing four hits and five runs, only one of them earned. He struck out 10 Eagles hitters. He drops to 4-5 on the year.

Spear had a memorable Senior Day, going a perfect 4-for-4 with a double, a walk, an RBI and a run scored. Manai went 3-for-4 with a walk and an RBI. Tuttle went 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.

The loss drops the Petrels to 12-27 on the season. Their season finale will be Sunday, when they will complete this crosstown two-game series at Emory. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
