Box Score The Oglethorpe baseball team went ahead in the early going Friday night against Millsaps in Jackson, Miss., but the home-standing Majors quickly turned the tables and blew the Petrels out, 11-1 in seven innings.
Oglethorpe got a first-inning lead when shortstop Spencer Transue singled and right fielder Nick Manai did the same thing, putting runners at first and second with nobody out. Second baseman Keith Dearden sacrificed the runners to second and third, then catcher Jeff Brothers grounded out to second, scoring Transue and giving the Petrels a 1-0 lead. However, pitcher Cory Leff struck out to end the inning, and the Petrels would only seriously threaten once more in the game.
They got runners to second and third with one out after a Leff double in the fourth, but stranded them there and didn't get a runner farther than first again. They wound up with five hits on the night.
Meanwhile, Millsaps scored at least a run in each of innings 2-5. They tallied three runs in the fourth to take a 6-1 lead, then scored two in the fifth to extend their lead to 8-1. They finished the game off via the 10-run rule with three runs in the seventh.
Leff suffered the loss on the night, allowing seven earned runs on nine hits over five innings, walking four. Manai went 2-for-3 on the night, continuing his torrid stretch of late.
The loss drops the Petrels to 5-16, 2-8 in SAA play. Tomorrow's schedule in Jackson has changed again due to forecasted showers and thunderstorms in the area. The first game of the doubleheader now gets started at noon Eastern time, while Game 2 gets underway at approximately 3:30 p.m. Eastern, or 30 minutes after the conclusion of Game 1.
