Baseball Drops Another One-Run Game to Rhodes

Box Score

The Oglethorpe men's baseball team fell in another one-run game to Rhodes Saturday afternoon, losing 8-7 at Anderson Field.

The Petrels have quite a history of one-run games with Rhodes in recent times, and both of the games in this series thus far have been one-run contests.

The visiting Lynx worked out to a 4-0 lead over the first five-and-a-half innings of the ballgame. However, Rhodes stranded 11 runners on base over those innings. That came back to haunt them in the bottom half of the inning when the Petrels put five runs on the board and took the lead.

The inning started when shortstop Spencer Transue drew a leadoff walk. Right fielder Nick Manai followed with a run-scoring double, cutting the Rhodes lead to 4-1. Then, designated hitter Cory Leff rifled another double into the gap in left-center to score Manai and cut the lead to 4-2. After two Petrel outs and a walk from left fielder Casey Innis, catcher Hunter Riley came through with a two-run triple, scoring Innis and Leff and tying the game 4-4. The Petrels took the lead when third baseman Frank Sarno reached on an error one batter later.

However, the Petrel lead was short-lived. In the top of the seventh, Rhodes scored four more runs and immediately retook an 8-5 lead.

The Petrels went down in order in the seventh, but mounted a rally in the eighth. Innis worked a one-out walk, as did Riley. Then with two men out, the Petrels loaded the bases and Transue followed with a single through the hole at short. The hit scored two runs and drew Oglethorpe to within a single run, 8-7.

However, the scoring stopped there, as the Petrels couldn't get anything going in the ninth, and the Petrels suffered the one-run loss.

Emmett Goodman got the start for the Petrels. He garnered a no-decision, as he was let off the hook by his offense with the five-run sixth. He allowed four runs on 10 hits over five-and-a-third innings of work.

Sam Franklin suffered the loss in relief for the Petrels, allowing an earned run on a hit and a walk. He faced two batters and did not record an out.

Transue went 3-for-4 with a double, a walk, two RBIs and a run. Riley posted a 1-for-3 afternoon with a triple, a walk, two RBIs and two runs.

The Petrels drop to 1-10 on the season, 0-2 in SAA competition. They try to salvage a game from this three-game set tomorrow at noon.
