Baseball Swept in Doubleheader at Sewanee

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Oglethorpe baseball team suffered a very tough day in Sewanee, Tenn., getting swept in a doubleheader by home-standing Sewanee Saturday afternoon, losing 6-4 in Game 1 and 7-2 in Game 2.

The Game 1 loss proved particularly tough for the Petrels, as they led 4-2 after six innings. They fell behind the home-standing Tigers 1-0 in the second, but came back with a run in the fourth after second baseman Keith Dearden doubled and pitcher Cory Leff doubled, as well.

Though the Tigers retook the lead in the bottom half of the inning, Oglethorpe scored two in the fifth to grab the advantage for themselves. With one out, center fielder Vernon Trice walked, as did shortstop Spencer Transue. Another walk from catcher Jeff Brothers after a fielder's choice from right fielder Nick Manai loaded the bases with two men out in the inning. Dearden came through with a two-run single to give the visiting side the lead.

The Petrels added an insurance run in the sixth when, with two outs, Trice singled, stole second, and scored on a Transue single to give the Petrels the two-run lead.

However, Sewanee tied the game with two in the seventh, then won the game with two more in the eighth. David Langhan suffered the loss in relief, allowing two runs on three hits over an inning and two-thirds. Leff gave up four runs on seven hits over six-and-a-third, walking two and striking out three.

Dearden went 2-for-5 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored.

The Petrels had difficulty shaking off the tough Game 1 loss in the seven-inning second game. They fell behind 2-0 early, though they would get a run back in the second.

Catcher Hunter Riley doubled and advanced to third on a wild pitch, and first baseman Casey Tuttle walked, bringing up third baseman Frank Sarno. Sarno grounded into a fielder's choice, putting Tuttle out but scoring Riley and cutting the Tigers lead in half, 2-1.

Unfortunately, Sewanee scored the next five runs of the game over the next three innings, taking a 7-1 lead with five of the scheduled seven innings completed. The Petrels got a run back in the seventh after center fielder Casey Innis tripled and scored on a Transue RBI groundout, but it was too little, too late for the Petrels.

Kyle Mitchell suffered the loss, allowing four earned runs (five total) on four hits and four walks through 3 2/3 innings. He struck out two Tigers in the process.

Innis went 2-for-2 after entering the game for Trice with a triple and a run scored, while Riley went 1-for-2 with a double and a run scored.

The losses drop the Petrels to 11-22 on the season, 5-12 in SAA play. They'll try to salvage a game from this three-game series on Sunday, when they take on Sewanee at 2 p.m. Eastern.
