Baseball Destroys Sewanee, 14-3; Salvages Game from 3-Game Set

Box Score

The Oglethorpe baseball team came back from dropping both games of a doubleheader Saturday to rout the home-standing Sewanee Tigers, 14-3, on Sunday in Sewanee, Tenn.

The Petrels got off to a huge start Sunday, scoring five runs in the first inning and putting Sewanee behind the 8-ball right away. Oglethorpe got five straight hits to lead off the game. Shortstop Spencer Transue and right fielder Nick Manai started the inning with singles, and catcher Jeff Brothers followed with a three-run homer to put the visiting side up 3-0 before making an out.

After the homer, second baseman Keith Dearden and first baseman Cory Leff produced back-to-back singles and advanced to scoring position on a groundout. That brought left fielder Will Hanna to the plate and he came through with a two-run single to provide the team with their five-run lead.

The Tigers answered with two in the bottom half of the inning, but Oglethorpe would score in the next three innings to pull away. They scored two in the second when Transue walked, stole second, and scored on a Brothers single. A Leff double drove Brothers in and made it 7-2.

In the third, third baseman Frank Sarno doubled and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Then, center fielder Vernon Trice delivered an RBI groundout to give the Petrels an 8-2 lead. After that, Transue doubled and Manai singled him home for a 9-2 third-inning lead.

In the fourth, Dearden reached third without the benefit of a hit and scored on a single by designated hitter Casey Innis. The Oglethorpe lead was 10-2.

Oglethorpe added two more for good measure in the seventh. Trice walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a passed ball. Meanwhile, Transue walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. A Manai RBI groundout scored Trice, and Transue scored on a wild pitch.

The Tigers barely avoided the 10-run rule by scoring a run with two outs in the seventh and getting back to within nine, but Oglethorpe added their final two runs in the ninth when Manai drove in Transue with an RBI double, then scored himself on a wild pitch.

Emmett Goodman picked up the win, delivering a solid start for the Petrels. He wasn't as good as he was a week ago, but he was more than good enough. He allowed just two runs on four hits over five innings, striking out six and walking three.

The offense broke out in a major way for the Petrels on Sunday. Transue was a perfect 2-for-2 with a double, four walks, five runs scored and a stolen base. Manai went 3-for-6 with a double, three RBIs and a couple of runs scored, while Brothers posted a 3-for-5 day with a home run, four RBIs and two runs scored. Innis went 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI.

The win improves the squad to 12-22 on the season, 6-12 in SAA play. This puts them in sixth place headed into the final weekend of the season, a game ahead of Centre for seventh and 2 1/2 game behind Hendrix for fifth. Oglethorpe hosts Hendrix next weekend. First, they will travel across town to take on Emory at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
