Baseball Splits Doubleheader with LaGrange to Wrap Up Regular Season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Oglethorpe baseball team wrapped up its regular season Tuesday evening with a doubleheader split against in-state rival LaGrange on Anderson Field. Oglethorpe took the first game, 4-3, then lost the second, 5-2.

The Petrels came back from two runs down in Game 1 to tie the game, 3-3, with two runs in the fifth inning, then got a two-out, pinch-hit, walk-off RBI double from Cory Leff in the seventh to win it.

In the seventh, the Petrels got a leadoff single from catcher Jeff Brothers, then had two straight batters hit into fielder's choice outs, leaving the runner still on first with two outs in the inning. However, Leff came to the plate to pinch-hit and delivered his RBI double to the gap in right-center, scoring first baseman Joey McAlpin and winning the game for the Petrels.

In the fifth, the Petrels came back from a 3-1 deficit with four straight one-out baserunners. Designated hitter Nick Manai walked, and that was followed by Brothers doubling deep to the fence in center field. That put the tying runs at second and third with only one out, and second baseman Keith Dearden delivered with an RBI single to right field scoring Manai. McAlpin followed with another RBI single, tying the game.

The Petrels also came back from an early 1-0 deficit in the fourth, when Brothers and Dearden led off the inning with back-to-back singles, and one batter later, right fielder Casey Innis came through with an RBI single to tie the score, 1-1. However, LaGrange quickly took their 3-1 lead with two in the top of the fifth, before the Petrels re-tied the game with two in the bottom half.

Sam Franklin picked up the win in relief for the Petrels, not allowing a run and only allowing a single hit over two innings of work. He struck out two of the seven batters he faced, and improves to 2-1 on the season. Spencer Transue got his first start of the season and pitched five innings, allowing three runs on six hits with a walk and two strikeouts. He also hit two Panther batters.

Brothers went 3-for-4 with a double and scored a run, while center fielder Vernon Trice went 2-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base. Dearden was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

In the nightcap, LaGrange took an early 5-0 lead with three runs in the first and two in the second, and Oglethorpe was never really able to fight back into the game. The Petrels did score two in the third. Third baseman Frank Sarno was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a passed ball, and Trice walked behind him. Right fielder Manai singled to load the bases with nobody out, and designated hitter Brothers was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring a run. However, the next batter, Dearden, grounded into a double play that, while scoring a run, effectively killed the rally. Neither team would score again, and the game ended 5-2, in favor of LaGrange.

Kyle Mitchell suffered the loss for the Petrels, allowing five runs on five hits over three innings. He walked two and struck out one, and falls to 1-5 on the season.

Manai went 2-for-4 at the plate, while Trice completed his good day with three walks, a run and a stolen base in an 0-for-1 game.

The results of the day mean that the Petrels finish the regular season with a 14-26 record. They will travel to Jackson, Miss., to take part in the double-elimination SAA Tournament this weekend. They start their weekend by taking on Hendrix at 3 p.m. Eastern time Friday.
