Box Score The sixth-seeded Oglethorpe baseball team fell in the first round of the double-elimination SAA Tournament Friday afternoon, losing to No. 4 seed Hendrix 6-2.
The Petrels left the bases loaded in the second inning and didn't get another baserunner to third base until the eighth inning. Meanwhile, though the Petrels held the score to 0-0 through three, Hendrix broke through with three runs in the fourth and three more in the seventh.
That put Oglethorpe in a difficult spot with just six outs to work with. They were able to score their first run of the game in the eighth, as catcher Jeff Brothers singled with one out, then scored on an RBI double from designated hitter Cory Leff. They scored a second run in the ninth when center fielder Vernon Trice bunted for a two-out single, advanced to third on a single from shortstop Spencer Transue, then scored on an RBI single from right fielder Nick Manai. However, Oglethorpe got no more in the ninth and Hendrix closed out the victory.
Starter Cory Leff suffered the loss for the Petrels, allowing two earned runs (three total) on five hits over four innings, walking three. He drops to 2-6 on the season.
Manai went 2-for-5 on the afternoon with an RBI, while left fielder Will Hanna posted a 2-for-4 day.
The loss drops the squad to 14-27 on the year. They'll play No. 8 seed Sewanee in an elimination game tomorrow at approximately 2 p.m. Eastern. If they're able to win that, they'll play again immediately following that first game, taking on the loser of tomorrow morning's game between Hendrix and No. 1 seed Millsaps in another elimination game.
