Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader from Centre

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Oglethorpe baseball team swept a doubleheader from Centre on Anderson Field Saturday, winning Game 1 6-3 and taking Game 2 2-1. The wins move the Petrels into a sixth-place tie with Centre in the SAA standings.

The Petrels fell behind 3-0 after three innings of Game 1. Two of those runs were unearned, as the Petrels committed three errors for the game. However, the team began its comeback in the fifth.

First baseman Casey Tuttle walked and third baseman Frank Sarno followed with a single to left, putting two runners on with nobody out. Left fielder Will Hanna then laid down a sacrifice bunt that the Centre pitcher threw down the right-field line, allowing both Tuttle and Sarno to score. Center fielder Vernon Trice moved Hanna to third with a sacrifice bunt of his own, then shortstop Spencer Transue hit an RBI groundout to tie the game, 3-3.

The Petrels picked up where they left off in the sixth. Tuttle again walked and Sarno again singled, this time with one out in the inning. Hanna followed with a single down the right-field line that loaded the bases. One batter later, a Centre error extended the inning and gave the Petrels a 4-3 lead. Right fielder Nick Manai followed with what proved to be a back-breaking two-run single, giving the Petrels the 6-3 lead. All three runs were unearned after the error extended the inning.

From there, the Petrels got an excellent three-inning pitching performance by Joseph Marco. He allowed the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but got out of the jam with a strikeout, and picked up his second save of the season. He allowed just a hit and a walk over his three innings of work. Cody Campbell picked up his first win of the season in relief, allowing just a walk in his inning of work.

Manai had another great game at the plate, going 3-for-4 with the two back-breaking RBIs and a stolen base. Sarno went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Game 2 was a pitchers' duel from the beginning, as starting pitchers Cory Leff and Tommy Munoz combined for two earned runs allowed in 11 total innings of work.

Centre broke through in the third with their lone run of the game, taking a 1-0 lead. However, the Petrel tied the game in the fourth inning of the seven-inning contest. Catcher Jeff Brothers reached on an error, then second baseman Keith Dearden followed with a double to the gap in left-center to put runners on second and third with nobody out. First baseman Tuttle grounded out to second with one out, scoring Brothers and tying the game, 1-1.

Though that was all the Petrels would get out of that inning, they rallied again in the fifth. Left fielder Hanna walked to lead off the inning, and center fielder Trice sacrificed him to second. Hanna advanced to third on a wild pitch, and shortstop Transue walked, setting the stage for Manai again. Manai came through with a sacrifice fly to deep left field, scoring Hanna and giving the Petrels a 2-1 lead that they would never relinquish.

Leff was excellent, allowing just the one run on seven scattered hits over six innings. He walked one and struck out six, picking up his first win of the season. Langhan came on in the seventh for the save. He allowed Centre runners to reach first and second with one out, but got a double play ball that bounced off the side of the mound right to Transue to get out of the inning and record his first save of the season.

With the victories, the Petrels improve to 7-19 on the season. They also improve their SAA record to 4-10, tying Centre for sixth in the process. The two teams will battle for sixth place outright on Sunday, when they'll play Game 3 of this series at 1 p.m.
