Goodman Delivers 4-Hit Shutout, Strikes Out 15 in 3-0 Victory Over Centre

Box Score

The Oglethorpe baseball team got a masterful pitching performance from senior Emmett Goodman en route to a 3-0 victory over Centre Sunday afternoon. The win completes a three-game sweep for Oglethorpe over the Colonels.

Goodman delivered a four-hit shutout of the Colonels, striking out 15 batters over his nine innings of work and walking just one. Goodman allowed just one Centre baserunner to reach third and two to reach second on the afternoon. Centre shortstop Aaron Ammann reached third in the third inning when he stole both second and third, and Colonel first baseman Trey Litsey reached second in the fourth on a sacrifice bunt. Other than that, a walk and four singles was all Goodman allowed on the day. The win improves Goodman to 2-5 on the season.

Centre's starting pitcher Kyle Neu matched Goodman through the first four innings, but the Petrels broke through in the fifth. With the bases empty and two outs, third baseman Frank Sarno walked, and center fielder Vernon Trice followed with his first career home run, a lined shot down the left-field line.

The two-run shot gave Goodman all the insurance he would need, but Oglethorpe added another run in the sixth. Second baseman Keith Dearden worked a one-out walk, and then with two out, catcher Hunter Riley reached on an error by the Centre third baseman. The Petrels used the extended inning to their advantage, as first baseman Casey Tuttle came through with an RBI single, scoring an unearned run for the Stormy Petrels.

The win improves the Petrels to 8-19 on the season, 5-10 in SAA competition. Because of the three-game sweep of Centre, Oglethorpe now moves ahead of them and into sixth place in the SAA standings. The Petrels sit just a game-and-a-half back of fifth-place Hendrix, and their final two series of the season are at last-place Sewanee and home against the Warriors.

First, though, they will travel to LaGrange on Tuesday at 7 p.m., then will host Rust in a four-game non-conference series Thursday and Friday on Anderson Field.
