Box Score The Oglethorpe baseball team had a tough day Tuesday atop Lookout Mountain, Georgia. They allowed 10 runs combined between the second and third innings and fell to the homestanding Covenant Scots 15-3 in seven innings. The loss dropped the Stormy Petrels to 15-16 on the season.
The Scots scored four runs on four hits and an error in the second, then continued with six runs on seven hits and an error in the third, building a 10-0 lead.
The Petrels came back with a solo home run from junior designated hitter Brandon Fish in the top of the fourth to make it 10-1, but Covenant answered back with a solo shot of their own in the bottom half of the inning.
Senior second baseman Keith Dearden followed with another solo shot to lead off the fifth, and the Petrels continued the inning when senior shortstop Spencer Transue was hit by a pitch, sophomore left fielder Jarvis Miller hit an infield single, and Fish reached on a fielding error, allowing a run to score. The Scots scored two more in the fifth, though, and added a pair of additional run in the sixth.
Senior right-hander Kolin Zimmer got the start for Oglethorpe and suffered the defeat, falling to 1-2 on the season. He went two innings and allowed four runs on four hits. He pitched in some tough luck, though, as all four runs were unearned.
Miller went 2 for 3 on the afternoon while Dearden and Fish both went 1 for 3 with their home runs.
"Today did not go well for us at all," said Oglethorpe head coach Dan Giordano. "We'll just have to get back to it with conference play this weekend. We have a big series against Sewanee coming up, with Senior Day festivities happening Saturday, so we have to move past this quickly."
The Petrels will host Sewanee in a 3-game SAA series this weekend to close out their home conference slate. They'll take on the Tigers as part of a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 3 p.m. from Anderson Field. Between games, the Petrels will celebrate Senior Day. The two teams will then close out the series Sunday at 1 p.m.
