Baseball Blanks Covenant 14-0 in Seven Innings to Start Season 3-0

Box Score

The Oglethorpe baseball team continued its outstanding play to start the season Tuesday afternoon, as they pounded the Covenant Scots at their home field on Lookout Mountain, winning 14-0 in seven innings to improve to 3-0 on the young season. The Stormy Petrels scored three runs each in the third and fourth innings, then blew the game open with a 6-run seventh inning to clinch the victory after Covenant failed to answer in the bottom half of the inning.

The Petrels were led on the day by senior designated hitter Adrian Celata, who went 3-for-4 with a home run, a walk, three RBIs and three runs scored. Sophomore first baseman Andrew Mink added a 2-for-4 day with a double, an RBI and a run scored.

Sophomore right-hander Noah Cole got the start and finished the day with his first victory of the season, going four innings without allowing a run while giving up just one hit and striking out four Covenant hitters. Senior left-hander Stuart Spiers gave up a hit in a third of an inning, but sophomore right-hander Kyle Blakeney and freshman right-hander Devlin Basinger combined to not allow a hit over the final 2 2/3 innings, striking out four.

Celata singled home senior center fielder Jarvis Miller for the first run of the game in the first inning. The Petrels were then able to extend their advantage in the third inning, as Mink drove in a run with a groundout, scoring Miller again and doubling Oglethorpe's advantage. A single from sophomore left fielder Ethan Edwards was sandwiched between walks by senior second baseman Matt Motz and senior third baseman Connor Crooke, the latter of which drove in a run. The Petrels picked up another tally on a passed ball to take a 4-0 lead.

They added three more in the fourth, starting with another run for Miller off a wild pitch. Celata followed with his first home run of the season to make it 6-0, then Mink doubled and came into score on an RBI single from Motz. Freshman shortstop Alex Featherstone drove in a run with a bases-loaded walk in the sixth to make it 8-0. The Petrels then put the game completely out of reach with six runs in the seventh.

"I liked the way our young guys came out today," said Oglethorpe head coach Dan Giordano. "Cole was really sharp on the mound and set the tone for the team. We had some timely hits and the bullpen was able to keep them off the board. We've got a long way to go, but this has been a great way to start the season!"

The Petrels are scheduled to be back in action this weekend, when they welcome MacMurray to Anderson Field for a 3-game set. Saturday's doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m. and Sunday will feature a single game at noon.
