Baseball Drops 11-1 Decision to Huntingdon

Box Score

The Oglethorpe baseball team rounded out their regular season Monday evening in Montgomery, Alabama, with an 11-1 defeat to Huntingdon in eight innings. The Stormy Petrels fell to 23-16 with the loss.

The Petrels fell behind 1-0 in the first inning, but freshman right-hander Devlin Basinger shut the Hawks down for his remaining two innings and the game stayed 1-0 into the fifth. Oglethorpe responded by tying the game at that point, as senior right fielder Adrian Celata delivered a two-out double and junior first baseman Andrew Mink followed with a run-scoring single to make it 1-1. However, Huntingdon came back with four runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 5-1 lead. From there, the home side pulled away with three more in the seventh, building their advantage to 8-1. With three additional runs in the eighth, the Hawks activated the 10-run rule, ending the game at that point.

Mink wound up having an excellent evening, going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Basinger went three innings and allowed a run on four hits. Sophomore right-hander Austin Manuel suffered the loss, allowing two runs on three hits over an inning-and-a-third.

"Tonight's game didn't go our way," said Oglethorpe head coach Dan Giordano. "It was a competitive game early, but we just couldn't get the big hit and it got away from us late. All our focus now is on this weekend and the SAA Tournament. We'll be ready for Thursday afternoon!"

The third-seeded Petrels will take on the sixth-seeded Centre Colonels in their tournament opener at 3:30 p.m. Eastern on Thursday in Memphis, Tennessee. They will be a part of a four-team, double-elimination pod that also includes No. 2 seed Rhodes and No. 7 seed Sewanee, with games running Thursday through Saturday.
