ATLANTA—Postseason play starts this weekend for Oglethorpe, with several fall teams primed to make an impact. Starting the weekend off will be the cross country teams Saturday morning, and both soccer teams will follow Saturday at 12 p.m.
Postseason action will continue into next weekend when the volleyball postseason tournament kicks off, and both Oglethorpe soccer teams could be in action once again.
Live video, live stats and other ways to follow each event can be found on Oglethorpe's athletics website at www.gopetrels.com and on social media @gopetrels.
Men's Cross Country
Oglethorpe heads to the Southern Athletic Association Championship with another high finish in its sights. The Stormy Petrels have finished in the top three every year since 2017, including a runner-up finish last year.
Freshmen Ashton Deriso and Asher Greene have led the Petrels twice each in the team's five-event season so far. Deriso was the individual winner in the first race of the season as Oglethorpe has taken a spot in the top 12 in every event. This included a runner-up at the SAA Preview in the second event of the year earlier in September, with Greene leading the charge in third place.
Women's Cross Country
Oglethorpe's women head to the conference championship fresh off a fourth-place finish last season, marking their highest team finish in the SAA in school history. The Petrels also return that whole team with a few key newcomers bolstering the squad.
Freshman Riley Michaud has been out front in all five events, helping the team take a spot in the top 20 every time. In fact, she became the first female Oglethorpe runner in the modern era to win a race when she was the first across the line at the SAA Preview.
Men's Soccer
The top-seeded Petrels host Millsaps Saturday at 12 p.m. in a quarterfinal matchup on the turf field. It will be a rematch of the 5-0 win Oglethorpe posted over the Majors back on Oct. 15, when freshman defender Hayden Binfield provided the eventual game winning goal in the 19th minute before Logan Llano and Matthews Braga tacked on two more goals in the first half.
The Petrels have home field advantage throughout the SAA postseason, so a win Saturday would mean they would return home for the semifinals Friday, Nov. 5, and potentially for the championship game Sunday, Nov. 7.
Women's Soccer
Whereas the men have the top seed, the women will face the top seed as they head to Centre Saturday at 12 p.m. It will be a rematch of the Petrels' SAA opener earlier this season when the Colonels scored early and never looked back.
Freshman Mackenzie Jones has led Oglethorpe this campaign with four goals on the year. Kirsten Wrona follows close behind with three goals and two assists.
