Pair of 6-run innings crucial in baseball's doubleheader split with Millsaps

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Oglethorpe baseball team split a doubleheader with the Millsaps Majors Saturday in Jackson, Mississippi, winning the second game 8-7 after falling 8-5 in Game 1. The winner of both games scored 6 runs in an inning, a tally which proved crucial in both contests.

Oglethorpe jumped all over the Majors in Game 2, hanging the 6-run frame on the home side in the first inning. A 2-run single from freshman shortstop Matthew Gill proved a big blow early in the frame, and the inning was capped off by a 2-run homer from sophomore catcher Conor Ledet. Up 6-0, though, the Petrels saw Millsaps fight their way back into the contest. They scored 6 consecutive runs to tie the game, tallying a run in the third and 5 in the fourth.

In the sixth of seven scheduled innings, though, the Petrels took the lead on a run-scoring fielder's choice from sophomore left fielder Carter Guarino. Freshman center fielder Gabe Bryant added an RBI single to give Oglethorpe an 8-6 lead. The Majors came back with a run in the bottom of the inning, but the Petrels held on for the victory.

Oglethorpe scored first on an error in the sixth inning of Game 1, but Millsaps answered with 6 runs in the bottom half of the frame. The Petrels responded with a run in the seventh and 3 in the eighth, as they got RBI singles from Guarino and sophomore first baseman George Krivsky to help the cause.

However, Millsaps responded with a couple runs in the bottom half of the inning to solidify the victory.

The same two teams will be back at it Sunday, when they play another doubleheader starting at noon Eastern.
