Baseball swept in pair of games at Millsaps, drops three of four in series

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Oglethorpe baseball team struggled Sunday afternoon at Twenty Field in Jackson, Mississippi, falling 6-2 in Game 1 and 8-7 in Game 2 to come home having salvaged just a game from the four-game series. The results dropped the Stormy Petrels to 7-12 overall and 3-5 in SAA play.

The Petrels fell behind the Majors 6-0 over the first four innings of the seven-inning first game. Oglethorpe bounced back with a run in the fifth off of an RBI single from freshman center fielder Gabe Bryant, then scored another on a wild pitch in the seventh and final inning. However, it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit.

Bryant finished 3-for-4 with an RBI while senior left fielder Alec Babb went 2-for-4.

The Petrels rapped out nine hits, but got limited traction as all of them were singles.

Sophomore lefty Carson Weir got the start and suffered the loss. He allowed 5 runs on seven hits and two walks over three innings.

In the second game, Oglethorpe jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second. Sophomore left fielder Carter Guarino drove in a run with a fielder's choice while junior shortstop Billy Finch hit a sacrifice fly in the frame. Millsaps responded with a run in the fourth, but the Petrels came back with 3 more in the top of the fifth to take a 5-1 lead. A pair of RBI singles from sophomore designated hitter Connor Ledet and junor third baseman Andrew Noack combined with a run-scoring sacrifice bunt from right fielder Weir to provide the tallies for the visitors.

However, the Majors turned the tables on the Petrels from there. They scored 3 runs in the bottom half of the inning to make it 5-4, then followed that up with 4 more runs in the sixth. When the dust settled, the home side had an 8-5 lead after six innings.

The Petrels scored a couple runs in the eighth inning on RBI singles from Weir and Bryant, bringing them to within a single run. However, they couldn't get much going in the ninth inning, and the Majors secured the victory.

Bryant went 4-for-5 with a double and an RBI for a combined 7-for-9 day at the plate. Ledet went 2-for-4 with 2 runs and an RBI, while Noack went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

The Petrels will be back in action next weekend when they host Hendrix in a four-game series at Anderson Field. The two teams will play a pair of doubleheaders with Saturday's first pitch at noon and Sunday's first pitch at 11 a.m.
