ATLANTAÂ -- After last week's game against the Millsaps Majors ended in defeat, the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels made a comeback with a 54-50 win Friday night inside Dorough Field House.
The Petrels were led by Daesha McAdams, totaling 11 points this game and tying with one of the Majors as the game high scorer.
"The only way we can get over the hump in close games is by using our experiences from the past and learning from them to change the results in the future," said Head Coach Alex Richey after the win. "We took two on the chin last weekend and were able to move past those results quickly to stay confident enough to get a win tonight. I'm proud of our growth and loved seeing some leadership on the floor and in the locker room tonight which allowed us to stay composed just enough to get the home win."
Although the Majors started the first quarter strong, Oglethorpe held the score at a tie for several minutes until pulling ahead. The Petrels would hold this lead for the remainder of the game.
The Stormy Petrels kept the Millsaps in their place, as the Majors were stuck at 11 points for a majority of the second quarter. Within that time, Oglethorpe went on a 9-2 run to put the score at 24-13. Both teams were able to score in the last minute, as the score settled to 27-15 by halftime.
The score remained stagnant for the first two minutes of the third quarter, until each team slowly began to rack up points. It seemed Millsaps was gaining on Oglethorpe, but the Stormy Petrels were already too far ahead for the Majors.
The fourth and final quarter of the game began with Oglethorpe well ahead of Millsaps, at 43-29. But the Petrels had lost their edge as the score was once again stagnant, sitting at 43-34 for three minutes. With a little more than five minutes remaining in the game, Millsaps quickly got closer and closer to Oglethorpe. But the Petrels kicked it into gear when the score hit 46-41.
The final minute was tense, with the Majors still just a few points behind at 51-47. The last 30 seconds seemed as if Oglethorpe was going to be able to barely make the win, with a score of 53-50 and under a minute on the clock. But Rose Dolmovich's free throw with just under three seconds on the clock secured a win for the Petrels with a final score of 54-50.
Up next for Oglethorpe is another home game in Dorough Field House on Sunday, Jan. 30, at 1 p.m. against Birmingham Southern.
