ATLANTA --
Dimetri Chambers scored 35, including 24 in the second half, and the Oglethorpe men's basketball team defeated Birmingham Southern 85-69 Sunday afternoon. The Stormy Petrels continued to be force to be reckoned with this season as they remain the best in the league with seven consecutive Southern Athletic Association wins and an 8-1 conference record.
Â
Chambers' 35 points marked the third highest scoring output in his career, and he also eclipsed 2,000 career points including 756 points in 49 games played at Bridgewater. This also was his 38th career game scoring 20 or more and 11th career game scoring 30 or more.
Â
"Congratulations to Dimetri," said Head Coach
Philip Ponder. "It is extremely rare for a player to reach 2,000 points, so that's a pretty amazing accomplishment."
Â
Lane Foster also had a big game, stuffing the stat sheet with six points, seven rebounds, seven assists and a career high seven steals. Other notable scorers for the Petrels included
Jack Murrah with 13 points and
Uba Ezigbo with 10 points.
Â
Oglethorpe trailed by seven at halftime, but an early 13-0 run in the second half swung the lead significantly and ultimately paved the way to victory for the Petrels.
Â
"I thought we had a really bad first half, but our second half was one of our best halves we have played all year," Ponder added. "We are still figuring out how to play with some new lineups and rotations, and hopefully we can build on our second half today. Our defensive intensity and offensive flow were great after halftime. That was a really good win."
Â
Up next, Oglethorpe will get a shot at redemption against Hendrix on Friday night at 8 p.m. Hendrix has been the only SAA team to defeat the Petrels this season, winning 83-72 in early January.
