Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Chambers sinks late winner as Petrels get redemption over Hendrix

ATLANTA — Trailing by two, Dimetri Chambers knocked down a 3-pointer with under 10 seconds to go, and the Petrels secured a hard-earned victory Friday night against Hendrix with a final score of 84-82. The two teams went neck and neck throughout the entire game with eight ties and seven lead changes. Oglethorpe still remains the No. 1 team in the league with a 9-1 conference record and eight straight wins.

It marked an extra special senior night for the Stormy Petrels, who honored Chambers, Toju Etiwe, Lane Foster, Trevor Gulley, Ryan Jenei, Will Koch and Carlos Sone prior to the win.

Chambers's late three sent him to 31 points which led all scorers. This was Chambers' 39th game scoring 20 or more and 12th career game scoring 30 or more. Other contributors included Foster with 15 points and nine assists with only one turnover, and Koch with 10 points.

At halftime, the Petrels were down by one with the score at 48-47. A 9-0 run in the second half helped to push Oglethorpe ahead, but Hendrix quickly responded and led by five with 90 seconds to go. Koch hit a big shot down the stretch to make the score 80-78, then Chambers tied it with a jumper in the paint with under 45 seconds left. After Hendrix took the lead on a pair of free throws with under 13 seconds left, Chambers swung the lead one final time, then Oglethorpe's defense came up with a big stop to seal the redemption and win the game.

"What an unbelievable basketball game!" Head Coach Philip Ponder said. "We could not get a stop in the first half, but luckily our offense was able to keep pace with them. Our defense was much better in the second half, which helped us get out to a lead for a bit before they surged ahead again. We were down five with under two minutes to go, but we hit a couple of clutch shots to pull out an unbelievable win."

Up next, Oglethorpe will play Rhodes at home on Sunday. The game is set to start at 3 p.m. following the women's game.
