ATLANTA - The Oglethorpe men's soccer team got a point on Sunday afternoon against an undefeated Rhodes College team, drawing the Southern Athletic Association game 0-0.
It was a very physical and end-to-end match, and both teams showcased their qualities. It would take a while for the Petrels to find rhythm in the match, with only three shots taken by the team in the first half.
Oglethorpe initially had to defend more than usual because of the threat that Rhodes provided when going forward. However, Jon Akin's team would finally find their rhythm in the second half and take control of the match. They constantly applied pressure on the Rhodes backline, and flurries of chances were created by players.
Stephen Summerow was able to create unease with crosses put into the box and provide Oglethorpe with plenty of opportunities that were not capitalized on. Dylan Bapst was also able to ease past defenders and create good chances. Unfortunately, it was not enough and Oglethorpe could not capitalize on their chances.
Oglethorpe's defense was sound in keeping a clean sheet. Players such as Daniel Amah were crucial. Amah was a stalwart in the defense and made sure that Rhodes did not get a sniff at goal. He was also able to help his team get the ball back. The sophomore has had a standout season so far after being promoted from OU2.
While this was not a win for the men's soccer team, this was a performance to build on. Oglethorpe put up a fight against Rhodes, who are unbeaten in the SAA. Offensively, there were moments in the match where Oglethorpe really had Rhodes dancing on their heels. It was just the final production that was lacking. Defensively, Oglethorpe kept Rhodes quiet as there was not a shot on goal from them.
