Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Petrels topped by No. 5 Berry in four sets

ATLANTA – Oglethorpe's Jackie Schner and Ellie Alfonso combined for 25 kills, but they came in a hard-fought defeat to No. 5 Berry Wednesday evening in a Southern Athletic Association match inside Dorough Field House.

Schner had 14 kills while Alfonso had 11 alongside 14 digs. Gabbi Phillips tallied 45 assists and 12 digs, and Sofia Cendoya led the defense with 24 digs.

The match was a repeat of Sept. 14's four-set decision at Berry, and this one again featured several tight sets. Berry took the first 25-22 after winning the first four points of the match, then used a 10-4 run to end the second set at 25-17 and go ahead 2-0 in the match.

Oglethorpe showed plenty of grit in the third set with Schner recording five kills and only one error to help the Stormy Petrels cut the Berry lead in half. They even weathered a late storm when Berry cut an 18-10 Oglethorpe lead down to 20-18. At 20-18, Oglethorpe won its next four points on kills, two coming from Schner and one apiece from Kaitlyn Bassett and Alfonso.

Berry responded in the fourth set by winning the first four points of the frame, then followed that with a 12-3 run that helped the Vikings win in four sets.

Match Notes

  • After Schner and Alfonso, Cate Rosenthal and Briella Kohler came next in the kill column with eight and seven, respectively.
  • Emelia Sengstock and Bassett followed next with five kills and four kills, and both recorded a solo block.
  • Oglethorpe moved to 8-7 (3-5 SAA) on the season.
