ATLANTA — Gabbi Phillips set the Oglethorpe record for assists in a match while Sofia Cendoya and Ellie Alfonso tallied career highs, and the Oglethorpe volleyball team won a thrilling five-set match against Centre Friday night in Dorough Field House.
After falling to Centre in four sets earlier this season in Danville, Kentucky, the Stormy Petrels came out victorious in the Southern Athletic Association conference rematch. The Colonels took the Petrels to five sets, but Oglethorpe won 19-17 in the fifth, with Jackie Schner and Kaitlyn Bassett earning huge kills on the last two points of the match.
The first set would go to Centre by a score of 25-22, but the Petrels responded by winning the second and third sets by margins of 25-16 and 25-19. The Colonels were able to squeeze past the Petrels in the fourth set 25-21, before Oglethorpe would win the fifth and final set in extra points.
A couple of Petrels posted career nights as Phillips, a sophomore, set a new career high and Oglethorpe record 51 assists in a single match in Friday's match. Junior Sofia Cendoya's 33 digs were a career high as well, and another junior, Ellie Alfonso, led Oglethorpe with 20 kills and 27 digs on the night, both career highs.
Alfonso also recorded three service aces. Schner added 15 kills, 17 digs, and three of Oglethorpe's 11 service aces.
